Medicine and Surgery, Bachelor

About the Programme

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is a 6 years professional programme for which the students are awarded the degrees in Medicine and Surgery upon successful completion of the programme.

Current statistics show that the doctor – to – potential patients’ ratio is still very low in the Eastern Africa region.  In Uganda, there is only one doctor for every 24,700 potential patients.  This is to be compared with that of other third world countries such as Bolivia, Honduras, and India where there is one doctor for every 2,000 to 3,000 potential patients.

Therefore there is a need to train more and more doctors.  However, the more important question to be answered from a needs assessment regards the type of training such doctors require to make them functionally suitable to face the challenges of the 21st century.

It has become clear from feedback obtained systematically and anecdotally from the communities served by the doctors that more innovative learning and teaching strategies as outlined, later on, is required to adequately prepare the doctors for the challenges they will need in their professional practice.  Moreover, the majority of the few doctors available serve the minority of the Ugandan community living in urban areas while the minority of the doctors are the ones that serve the majority of the community living in rural areas.
