Arts and Science Education
The Department of Arts and Science Education supports teacher education, pedagogy and curriculum practice, student mentorship and 12 active programmes within College of Education, Open and Distance Learning at the Main Campus.
The Department of Arts and Science Education came into existence with the establishment of the Institution in 2001. The course involves both theoretical and practical aspects. The department has programmes at both Diploma and Bachelor levels in order to meet the rapidly changing demands in Arts and Science Education. The curriculums of the programmes are geared towards meeting high academic and professional standards of the qualifications and products of the University. The programmes, in the department, are generally intended for qualified university entrants from recognized Secondary Schools and wish to gain qualifications in a wide range of educational contexts or upgrade their expertise.
The Department has highly skilled staff, both national and international experts that go beyond the boundaries of classroom to groom students adequately and appropriately. Indeed, the Department is living up to this challenge by offering well-articulated courses that will provoke the graduates to explore the heights in search for solutions to the many problems currently bedevilling education sector and the society as a whole. Also, the Department believes that teacher education (the teacher is the most significant resource in learning), is the footstool for developing people, the society and the economy. This became even more pronounced since the adoption of the Uganda government policies of Universal Primary Education, and later Universal Post Primary Education.
Objectives
The objectives of the department are to:
- Train professional Arts and Science educators who are competent in making accurate observations and practice.
- Impart in students problem-solving skills that can enable them to contribute to the education sector.
- Develop students for careers in primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and tertiary institutions such as polytechnics.
- Prepare students for graduate study.
Mission
The Department's mission is to maintain a world-class quality in teaching and research to enhance professional development and satisfaction of both students and staff.
