All the candidates who have been admitted under entry points 7.1-7.5 above must attend the Multi-professional Training Programme (MTP) of KIU at the Western Campus and obtain passes in all courses of the programme before they can be admitted into the MBChB, BPH, BMLS, BCM and other Biomedical courses(Bachelor of Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology e.t.c) programs.

Objectives

  1. To identify the causes of diseases/disorders (genetic, developmental, metabolic, toxic, microbiologic, autoimmune, neoplastic, degenerative, behavioural, cognitive, psychological, social environmental, cultural and traumatic and recognize the ways in which they affect the body (pathogenesis).
  2. To work with the community to promote health, prevent diseases and empower communities to produce a health population (promote good health).
  3. To effectively utilizing appropriate inter-personal and communication skills in provision of health care.

  • To provide education by developing and delivering academic programmes that are responsive to the market demands through innovative teaching methodologies that engage students in self-directed learning.
  • To respond to societal needs by designing and delivery of an education guided by the principles and values of respect for society, economy and environment and to provide and develop a supportive research environment in which scholars at every stage of their career can flourish.

Its vision is to become an Institution of national and International recognition, excelling in providing education, pursuing research, community service and advocacy.  

Philosophy

To train Doctors who are conversant with the health problems of the communities they will serve; and who have knowledge, skills and above, all appropriate attitudes that will make them sufficiently competent to run the health services so as to achieve health for all in the next few decades.

Core Values

  1. To produce Medical practitioners whose professional practice will lead to an improvement of the health of the population of the individual, family and community levels.
  2. To train more and more doctors and to make them functionally suitable to face the challenges of the 21st century.  Current statistics show that the doctor câ¬â€œ to câ¬â€œ potential patientscâ¬â„c ratio is still very low in the Eastern Africa region.  In Uganda there is only one doctor for every 24,700 potential patients.  This is to be compared with that of other third world countries such as Bolivia, Honduras and India where there is one doctor for every 2,000 to 3,000 potential patients.  Therefore there is a need to train more and more doctors.
