Clinical Pharmacy and pharmacy practice
The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and pharmacy practice supports pharmaceutical sciences, medicines management and pharmacy practice, student mentorship and 1 active programme within School of Pharmacy at the Western Campus.
The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice coordinates all courses related to clinical pharmacy, pharmacy practice, ethics and pharmacy law, pharmacy management, pharmacoecomonics, entrepreneurship, and pharmacy clinical clerkships among others. These courses constitute the core of pharmacy programmes taught at diploma and bachelors level in the School of Pharmacy. The Department is mandated to develop new and innovative programmes in these sub-specialties and currently is developing a Master of Pharmacy in Clinical Pharmacy and Biopharmaceutics which is expected to be launched by the end of 2020 after approval by the Pharmacy Council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) and the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). The department works closely with the pharmacy and all clinical departments of the teaching hospital, KIUTH, where our students undertake the bulk of their clinical pharmacy rotations, clerkships and pharmacy practice training including dispensing and records management.
The department is in the process of establishing a fully equipped skills lab to enable the students hone their clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice skills before they are deployed to the hospital pharmacies and wards.
Objectives
- To deliver quality teaching and research in clinical pharmacy and community pharmacy practice in accordance with world class best practices.
- To develop and promote a learning environment that fosters conducive learning experience for students based on positive engagement and feedback.
- To continually develop new training programmes in clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice that respond to the existing and emerging human resource needs for the health sector in Uganda and the Region.
- To periodically adapt all programmes and courses in the department to remain relevant and applicable to existing and emerging trends in clinical pharmacy research and best practices.
- To build a strong research, innovation, collaboration and community outreach tradition.
- To enhance staff capacity through deliberate staff training by conducting seminars, workshops, and continuing medical education in fields relevant to clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice.

To train highly competent clinical and community pharmacists by developing and delivering relevant academic programmes that are responsive to local, national and global needs of the health sector through innovative, evidence-based, and practical training experience.
