Journalism and Media Studies

The rapid growth of the communications sector requires people who are adequately trained in various aspects of mass communication. Indeed, the forces of globalization raise the imperative for adopting better ways of communicating efficiently and effectively. Mass communication is critical in dealing with institutionalized forms of public message production and dissemination, operating on a large scale. It functions through the complex media of print journalism, radio, television, and the Internet.

The department of Journalism and Media Studies currently offers the following course:

• Certificate in Mass Communication 
  
• Diploma in Mass Communication
• Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication
• Master of Science in Mass Communication

For practical classes, we have a well-furnished computer laboratory, to necessitate our practical lessons. Our students also participate in production and broadcasts of news every Friday within the university premises. We also have internship programs to expose our students to the practicum part of the course.

Achievements:

All our programs are fully accredited by the National Council for Higher Education. The department is currently developing Ph.D curriculum in Mass Communication, and we expect to attract masses, KIU being the leading private university in Uganda.Since 2015, the Department enrolled its students to participate in the Inter-Institutional Media challenge, and won several awards in different categories, latest award being the Overall Best-Luganda News Team winner 2018. Out of such competitions, our students have attracted placements in leading media stations in Uganda like in NBS and Record TV.

We also run weekly news bulletins every Friday for both the KIU fraternity and environs. These news items are produced and edited by our students as a basis to gain the skills. However, they are guided by one of our lead staff to ensure quality production.

We also participate in community engagement, field trips and study tours, and also organize annual media convention and invite journalists within and outside Uganda to share with our students their experiences.
