Pharmacognosy and Natural Products
The Department of Pharmacognosy and Natural Products supports pharmaceutical sciences, medicines management and pharmacy practice, student mentorship and curriculum delivery within School of Pharmacy at the Western Campus.
The Department of Pharmacognosy and Natural Products is an academic department in School of Pharmacy at Western Campus. It coordinates teaching, assessment, student mentorship and scholarly activity connected to pharmaceutical sciences, medicines management and pharmacy practice.
The department contributes to KIU's academic mission by supporting practical learning, professional formation, research awareness and quality programme delivery. It supports curriculum delivery, academic guidance and the development of discipline-focused learning experiences.
Objectives
- To contribute to the production of competent independent pharmacists with critical thinking skills and life-long learning habits through excellent and motivating research-driven teaching.
- To expose students to the practice environments where the knowledge and skills of their training are in use with the expectation of broadening their outlook and enriching their experience.
- To motivate faculty, staff and students to strive for excellence and achieve at the highest level facilitating the development and improvement of the global environment.
- Identify the main and various chemical groups of active principles of official crude drugs
- Describe vernacular names, botanical and geographical source, historical development and standards of official crude drugs
- Describe conditions for cultivation and collection of crude drugs
- Describe organoleptic, macroscopic, microscopic, chemical methods of identification and chemical constituents
- Discuss the pharmacological and commercial significance of crude drugs
- Distinguishes official drugs from adulterants
- Describe the biosynthetic pathways involved in the production of secondary metabolites
- Identify the powder ingredients of crude drugs

Philosophy

Pharmaceutical Science is a three year Program that focuses on training highly competent Pharmaceutical Scientists; capable of providing technical expertise in the pharmaceutical sector within Uganda and Internationally. Satisfactory completion of the program leads to award of the câ¬ÅBachelor of Science Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciencesc⬠of Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
