Physiology
The Department of Physiology supports human physiology, body systems and biomedical training, student mentorship and 3 active programmes within Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at the Western Campus.
The department of Physiology is one of the departments that comprise the Faculty of Biomedical sciences and it offers training in the Physiology discipline to all health sciences courses offered by the school of health sciences at KIU. It is thus this department that will host the Bachelor of Science of Physiology whose curriculum we have revised.
Physiology is the foundation of medical and other health related professions. It has progressed from the traditional cellular and systemic body functions to a more molecular and multicellular level, where mechanisms of actions of physiological processes are studied. Concurrently the discipline offers a deeper understanding of how the human body functions and gives an idea of what to expect when these functions become abnormal. The demand for specialist physiologists in East Africa and the African continent as a whole is of paramount importance. There is a gap that needs to be filled in as an attempt to train more qualified health professional students into properly practicing medical practitioners.
Objectives
To provide a professional development of graduates and continued learning for practicing professionals. To carry out research projects in various fields of physiology that shall contribute to medical, technological, economic and social development of society.

To develop a research frontier and teaching standards that is holistic which will enhance the quality of knowledge acquired by the graduates for a better ethical conduct.

Philosophy
The department of Physiology is responsible for building graduates to achieve their desired objectives through the provision of relevant and productive knowledge which will positively influence their wellbeing and the society. The department stands for the development of graduates with detailed and positive intellectual capacity.
Core Values
Physiologists work at the level of whole organisms, tissues, cells and now molecules and a wide range of methods are used. This will involve understanding how these proteins influence the activity of cells, tissues and the whole organism in health and disease.
