Objectives

• Effective mastery of the theoretical knowledge of the specialty, including the relevant aspects of basic medical and social sciences and of the law as it relates to the practice of psychiatry
• Effective skill in the use of an integrated biological, psychological and social model in the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of mental disorders in males and females of all ages
• Effective communication ability with patients, families, medical colleagues and other health care professionals
• The capacity to maintain complete and accurate health records
• Attitudes which reflect an ability to work effectively and ethically on an independent basis and/or as a member of a multidisciplinary team, and which are founded on respect for and sensitivity to the patient, his/her family and the community

Mission

Our mission is to develop psychiatrist leaders, scholars, and clinician-educators who are compassionate, provide the safest mental health and addiction care, and are ready for any career opportunity and challenge. We hope to accomplish this through mentoring, educational opportunities both within and outside our institution, and in an environment that promotes personal well-being.

Vision

The vision for our program is ultimately to improve the mental health care provided to patients in our câ¬Å“communityc⬝ and beyond (local, state, regional/national, including veteran) by training well-rounded and clinically exceptional psychiatrists. In doing so we seek to enhance the development and well-being of our trainees and faculty so that they can better serve our patients and become the psychiatrists they strive to be.

Philosophy

The philosophy of psychiatry explores philosophical questions relating to psychiatry and mental illness. The philosopher of science and medicine Dominic Murphy identifies three areas of exploration in the philosophy of psychiatry.
