Surgery
The Department of Surgery supports surgical sciences, clinical judgement and theatre-based learning, student mentorship and 2 active programmes within Faculty of Clinical Medicine and Dentistry at the Western Campus.
In general surgery, the surgeon is expected to perform both pre- and post-operative care and management other than the surgery itself. General surgeons can diagnose several types of diseases, especially those that are related to the abdomen and the organs connected to it.
These include bile ducts, liver, pancreas, spleen, appendix, small and large intestine, rectum, and the stomach. The surgeon may also operate the thoracic region, glands in the thyroids, and hernias. To a certain extent, general surgeons are also responsible for procedures performed on the skin and the breast.
Objectives
The student will successfully demonstrate directed history and physical examinations on the surgical patient, with emphasis on preoperative planning and decision-making. This will include specialized examinations related to surgical disease, such as breast examinations and vascular examinations.
Mission
- To provide the best possible care to patients who require surgical services in the areas of surgical oncology and general, pediatric, vascular, and transplantation surgery.
- To provide state of the art educational programs in all areas of clinical surgery and in the biologic basis of surgical illness.
- To produce new information from its research programs which will contribute to the practical solutions and theoretical structure of future surgical practice.
