Course Description

This courses is a follow up on the previous course and is focused on discussion of all major metabolic pathways (carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids/proteins, nucleic acids). Key molecular biology aspects are also covered in this course.

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

This course introduces the student to the various metabolic pathways. It examines both anabolic and catabolic pathways and various diseases associated with abnormalities in any of these pathways.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

As a result of studying the course, students will be able to;

  • Describe the various carbohydrate metabolic pathways, regulation and clinical significance.
  • Describe the various lipid metabolic pathways, regulation and clinical significance.
  • Describe the various protein metabolic pathways, regulation and clinical significance.
  • Describe the various nucleic acid metabolic pathways, regulation and clinical significance.
  • Discuss the molecular concepts (bioinformatics era), gene expression and regulation.
  • Integrate the various metabolic pathways and their role in overall homeostasis.
  • Perform various biochemical assays, interpret results obtained and make inferences in relation health and disease.
