COLLEGE/SCHOOL/FACULTY: Faculty of Biomedical Sciences
STATUS: Core
PROGRAMME TYPE: Postgraduate

Course Description

The students must have done and passed all the previous courses. The research project is a compulsory part of the MSc in microbiology.

COURSE JUSTIFICATION:

A research project is designed to give individual students the opportunity to acquire practical experience by empirical scientific research methods and to learn to work independently in a research laboratory.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The research project provides students with a research-based learning experience through independently carrying out research under supervision of established scientists during a prolonged period of time. The student further learns about the possibilities on the job market after graduation, and has the opportunity to discover gaps in his knowledge or skills and fill these. A research project usually begins with a study of a topic. Studying the relevant literature is included in the project time. However, practical work such as laboratory experiments, fieldwork or computer simulations, make up the larger part of a research project. The research project should be completed with a written report and oral presentation.

 COURSE AIMS

During the course of study the student shall be able to;

Formulate a clear scientific question

Develop and validate a hypothesis

Plan his/her the research

Read of relevant literature which will be incorporated in the final written report;

Accumulate sufficient reliable data

Process (statistics etc.) of the data and

Critically judge the obtained results in relation to the goals and the line of research.

 Present of findings during informal colloquia and scientific meetings

Describe and critically discuss the above activities in a written report (in English), in which the methodology is accounted for and the original phrasing is substantiated;  Present and discuss of the results in English.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this Industrial internship, the student should be able to do the following;

Should have gained hand-on experience on methods employed in the hospital and research setups.

Should have integrated the theoretical knowledge learned in the class with the processes and methods employed in the clinical/industrial research settings

Should be able to use some of the equipments (both traditional and state of the arts) available in the clinical/research set ups.

Should have developed enough interest into research geared towards solving associated problems Should have developed personal transferable skills that are essential for subsequent careers.
