COURSE CONTENT

·                     Ecology: Definitions; Scope and Significance

·                     Ecosystems: Definition; Types;  Ecosystem Structures and functions; Stability      and resilience, ecosystem values (services and goods) and ecosystem    conservation

·                     Energy flow: Solar radiation; Laws of Thermodynamics; Food chain and web;      Trophic level; ecological pyramids 

·                     Bio-geochemical cycles: Nitrogen; Carbon; Water/hydrological; Sulphur and           Phosphorus.

·                     Population Ecology and analysis: species; population dynamics; Predator-prey           relationship; Density estimation and stability; Anthropogenic impacts and fires)

·                     Ecological communities: interactions and interrelationships; Successions;   dominant, keystone, flagship, and Alien species.

·                     Major ecosystems of East Africa: Aquatic and Terrestrial ecosystems

·                     Biogeography: Disturbance; Habitat fragmentation and development and   evolution

·                     Ecological sampling procedures, field methods and population estimation.
