Course Description

COURSE JUSTIFICATION

Guidance and counseling is part of the four curriculum dimensions of the school system. It is important that teacher trainees develop the skills and knowledge of providing guidance and counseling support when they qualify. This will help schools develop and guidance and support system with the help of Guidance and counseling teachers.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course will cover the key concepts of guidance and counseling, the development of guidance and counseling skills, trends, stages and process of guidance and counseling and show how these can be applied in real school contexts with individual students.

COURSE AIM:

The aim of this course unit is to introduce student teachers to the role of the counselor, areas where students need counseling, qualities of a good counselor among others.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of the unit, students are expected to know:

  • Discuss the difference between educational guidance and counseling
  • Explain attributes of a good counselor in line to those of a good teacher
  • Describe the factors that affect guidance and counseling in schools
  • Explain how they are applied to students
