Course Content and Outline

COURSE CONTENT

·              Physical – chemical properties of water

·                       Fresh and marine water ecology

·                       Tropical, temperate, and polar lakes

·                       Plankton and macro-organisms: ecology

·                       Primary production: determination and limiting factors

·                       Secondary production – Zooplankton and macro-organism; aquatic food web

·                        Man’s impact via damming, sewage disposal, pollution, eutrophication – causes          and effects.  Sewage treatment

·                       Swamp ecology

·                       The marine ecosystem; zonation; shore or littoral zone problems; adaptations     to fit shore life

·                       Factors regulating aquatic organic production; the over-fishing problem in          East Africa

MODE OF DELIVERY

·         Three one-hour lectures per week

·         One 3 – hour practical session per week

·         Field visits to National Water and Sewerage Plant, Fish market, Running Water         and Lake
