Course Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course integrates fundamental spatial data and boundary law theoretical knowledge with practical applications.  Students gain exposure to the latest in geomatics technologies and boundary theory as applied to construction.  It covers property boundary determination, digital mapping, geodesy, geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS), land information management, photogrammetry, and remote sensing.

 

COURSE JUSTIFICATION/RATIONALE

The course enables students to learn different aspects of geomatics and the advancement in different types of surveying. The course will expose students to the new frontiers of science like hydrographic surveying, EDM, Global Positioning System and Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

·        Acquire knowledge to design, develop geospatial information about the land, infrastructure, natural resources, and the environment.

·        Learn how to operate systems for collecting, analyzing, and utilizing geospatial information about the land, infrastructure, natural resources, and the environment.

·        Further the knowledge of photogrammetry and cartography

·        Get introduced to remote sensing technique

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

A student on completing this course is expected to:

·        Analyse survey network computations and use mapping science tools in order to support civil engineering design projects

·        Collect, analyse and utilize geospatial information for design purposes

·        Apply remote sensing to geomatic design

·        Apply photogrammetry and cartography in surveying
