Course Content and Outline

COURSE CONTENT

·      Review of vector properties: the dot product and cross product.

·      Vector-valued functions: Parameterized Curves, arc length.

·      Differentiation in Several Variables. Functions of several variables, Limits, The derivative, Higher-order Partial Derivatives, The Chain Rule, Directional Derivatives and the Gradient.

·      Maxima and minima in several variables, Differentials and Taylor’s formula, Extrema, Lagrange multipliers, Applications.

·      Multiple Integration, Areas and volumes. Double integrals. Triple integrals and change of variables.

·      Introduction to vector analysis. The theorems of Stokes and Gauss and their applications; intrinsic definitions of gradient, divergence and curl; Poincare's lemma, scalar and vector potentials.
