COURSE
JUSTIFICATION
Teacher
trainees need knowledge and skills sets in sociology of Education to examine
the implications of various social problems of the whole school structure and
the relationship between education and society, concerned with educational
aims, methods, educational institutions, administration and curriculum. Teacher
trainees need to demonstrate an understanding of how a variety of social and
cultural characteristics may impact the functioning of schools and student
learning, including socioeconomic status, ethnicity and cultural background, gender,
geographic location and school type.
COURSE
DESCRIPTION
It is an introductory study of the dimensions of
social structure, social control and social change in the context of education
and schools in particular.Sociology studies social
interaction in groups that is, consequences and patterns of individual
behaviors, Sociology studies activities, associations, conflicts and roles in a
society, in other words we study how human groups operate through
different institutions for example schools, societies etc, Education sociology
examines social institutions that influence educational process for example
family, peer group, mass media, and school.
COURSE AIM
The
course is intended to enable learners to examine various social problems of the
whole school structureand the relationship between education and society,
concerned with educational aims, methods, educational institutions,
administration and curriculum. Also concerns with the economic, religious’
political, social and cultural forces of the society in which they function.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By
the end of the course students should be able to:
§ Explain
the concept of sociology and its relevancy to the teacher.
§ Appreciate
the nature of the society, meaning, features, types and groupings
§ Explain
the forms of education, its importance to the society and the societal
perception of education
§ Analyse
how the society’s social systems (culture, norms, values…) influence academic
achievement, the positive and negative influence of societal environment on
individual learning and other factors that could affect academic performance
§ Examine
the concept of socialization, key features, types, modes of socialization and
the agents of socialization
§ Analyze
the social problems faced by adolescents, the causes of school dropout,
theories explaining dropout and ways to curb down the problem
§ Discuss
social mobility, types of social mobility, role of education on social
mobility, relationship between educational qualifications and occupational
level.
§ Describe
the characteristics of the teaching profession, status of the teacher in the
society, the role of the teaching service commission, functions of the Uganda
teachers’ Association, the societal perception of teaching, role of PTA.
