COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course encampuses the origins, sources, meaning, significance, content, components, sequence, development, resources, methods and modes of evaluation of social studies. It also examines the relationship and contrast with other disciplines. The emphasis of the course is ‘how to teach Social Studies’ as well designing a school syllabus that illuminates content knowledge, pedagogy and skills adaptive to a 21st century learner.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course unit, students should be able to:

  • Exhibit an understanding of the origin and scope of Social Studies.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the justification of teaching Social Studies in School
  • Assess the relationship and contradiction between Social Studies and Social Sciences
  • Conduct an in depth and critical analysis of major developments in the social studies world.
  •  Appreciate and understand the impact of Social Studies on communities
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the methods of teaching Social Studies
  • Exhibit an understanding of assessment and evaluation in a Social Studies classroom

COURSE AIM:

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the different pedagogical approaches used in the teaching of Social Studies while offering practical experiences of peer teaching and provision of constructive feedback.
