COURSE DESCRIPTION
The
course is an introductory course in quantum mechanics. The course exposes the
inadequacies of classical Physics in describing matter on the microscopic
scale. The course also introduces the student to the notion of a wave function
and to the formalism of quantum mechanics; The Schrödinger Equation;
One-Dimensional Quantised Systems; Wave Corpuscular
Duality; The Uncertainty Relations; Central Potential;
Coulomb Interaction; The harmonic Oscillator.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By
the end of the course the student will be able to:
·
Describe the
reasons for introducing quantum theory and spell out the connection between
classical Physics and quantum Physics.
·
Discuss the quantum
formalism to microscopic physical systems.
·
Solve simple
one-dimensional time-independent problems in wave mechanics using analytic
solution techniques.
·
Explain
approximation methods to simple one-dimensional systems.
·
Apply Bohr’s
interpretation of the wave function in calculating expectation values of
physical observables.
