English sentence structure (9 hours)

  • Sentence constituents: clause, phrase, word, morpheme
  • Simple sentence
  • The grammatical hierarchy
  • Embedding: subordination and coordination

Clause structure (12 hours)

  • Elements of clause structure: subjects (S), verb (V), object(O), complement (C), adverbial (A)
  • English as a ‘fixed word-order’ language
  • Clause types
  • Objects and complements
  • Active and passive structures

Phrase structure (12 hours)

  • Phrases as clause elements
  • Structural characteristics of phrasal categories: verb phrase, noun phrase, adjective phrase, adverb phrase, prepositional phrase.

Word Classes (12 hours)

  • Open and closed class items and other categories
  • Lexical and grammatical words
  • Pro-forms and wh-words
