Course Description

COURSE JUSTIFICATION

There is need to provide opportunities for Initial Teacher Education students to the evolution and development of Uganda’s education system  as well as  an examination of the  education commissions that have shaped the Ugandan education system .

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course will introduce students to theevolution and development of Uganda’s education system. In addition an examination of commissions that have shaped the Ugandan education  system will be undertaken.

COURSE AIM

To develop students’ knowledge and appreciation of the evolution and development of Uganda’s education systemand broadly the development of formal education in East African countries.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course unit, the students should be able to;

  • Analyze educational issues and practice within a historical context.
  • Make a critical appraisal of indigenous education vis-à-vis formal education.
  • Analyze education during the post independence period in East Africa in general and Uganda in particular.
  • Examine the recommendations of various education commissions and their implications
