Course Content and Outline

Parasitology

 Introduction to Parasitology:                          4hrs

  •   General taxonomy of parasites of medical importance.
  • Types of parasites and types of hosts.
  • Categories of association between two different species of living animals.
  • Sources of infection and portals of entry.

 Helmintology                                                    10 hrs

  •   Liverflukes: Fasciola  gigantica & Fasciola  hepatica
  •   Intestinalflukes: Fasciolopsisbuski, Heterophyesheterophyes &    
  • Metagonimus yokogawiLungflukes: Paragonimus westermani
  •  Bloodflukes: Schistosomahaematobium, Schistosoma mansoni & Schistosoma japonicum        
  • Intestinalcestodes: Diphylobothrium latum, Hymenolepis nana,Hymenolepis    diminuta, Taenia saginata, Taenia solium & Dipylidum caninum.
  • Tissue or somatic cestodes causing Cysticercosis,Hydatidosis&Sparganosis 
  •  Intestinal nematodes: Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichocephalustrichiura, Entrobius vermicularis, Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, Strongyloidesstercoralis & Trichinella spiralis.
  •    Tissue nematodes: Wuchereribancrofti, Brugia
  •     malayi, Loaloa, Onchcercavolvulus & Dracunculus medinensis.
  •   Nematodes causing Larva Migrans.

 Protozology                         10hrs

  •     The Amoebae :(Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba coli & free-living Amoebae).
  •  The Ciliates:  (Balantidium coli).
  • Haemoflagellates: (Leishmania spp & Trypanosoma spp.).
  •  Theflagellates:(Giardia lamblia, Trichomonas vaginalis & Trichomonas intestinalis).
  •    The Sporozoa: (Toxoplasma gondii,Malarial parasites, Cryptosporidium &Babesia).

 Entomology                  6hrs

  •  Methods by which arthropods can affect humans.
  • Types of disease transmission by arthropods
  •    Arthropods that are biological vectors of important human pathogens (concerning their  morphology, species, disease transmitted, etiological agent and relation of the arthropod to the pathogen and the human infection).

 PRACTICALS                     30hrs

Identification of parasites, collection of stool samples, analysis of stool samples for intestinal parasites, Blood parasites, Preparation of thick and thin blood films, Staining and examination of both thin and thick blood films for malaria and other heamoparasites
