Course Content and Outline

  • Interpret and write down on staff rhythmic patterns in simple time on a monotone to dictation
  • Interpret and write down on staff melodic phrases, name and write intervals to dictation
  • Name cadences as perfect (Full close), imperfect (Half close), plagal (Amen) and interrupted (Deceptive) cadences.
  • Classification of Western instruments; assembling for different uses; symphony orchestra, concertos, brass band etc
  • Piano: Play major scales, arpeggios and two pieces of suitable grade
  • Recorder: Play scales and two pieces of suitable grade.
  • Guitar: Strumming the major and minor chords to accompany two songs
  • Any other instrument of the western music orchestra: performing two songs on it appropriately
  • Performing songs on an African instrument
