Course Content and Outline

Lyric Setting and Emphasis, Phrase Length and Space,

Phrase Beginnings/Stressed Words, Phrase Endings,

Downbeat Endings for the Title                                       

Repetition,  Sequence, Inversion Contrasting Ideas,

Number of Phrases, Verse, Prechorus, Chorus                    

One Chord Tone ,Decorations, Arpeggios, Passing Notes ,

Scale Lines, Cadences: Major and Minor, Motif treatment     (15 hrs.)

Adding an answering phrase; using conjunct movement, leaps, syncopation, cadences, phrase balance etc

Elementary Harmony: Triads, four-part harmony;               (15 hrs.)

  •   chord progression in major scales using primary chords
  •    in root position, first and second inversion
  • Counterpoint: two part writing; 1st species counterpoint,

           harmonic intervals, parallelism

     At the end of this course the learner will have acquired effective ways to write melodies over common modes and chords, and develop these ideas into complete songs
