Course Content and Outline

  1. Community music practices of Ugandan communities; role of Music and Dance in communities , characteristics of folk music and Dance
  2. Factors that shape community music practices; music themes, different instruments that are used by different communities and why, singing and instrumental accompaniment, costumes and other performance features
  3. Community songs; characteristics, ethnic origins, social functions such as initiation, twin rituals etc, importance in society, documenting songs
  4. Life and works of selected Ugandan musicians and composers
  5. Developments in Music and Dance practices before and after foreign civilization
