Course Content and Outline

Introduction                                                                                                     5 hrs

    Evidence- Based- Practice (EBP) in Med-Surg. Nursing

  •      Skills in computer search for evidence of effective interventions for different Med-Surg.cases.
  •     Application of the Nursing Process in Med-Surg. care.
  •      The possibility of computer assisted nursing care in Uganda. 
  •       Use of electronic care plans for commonly occurring med-surg. cases.  

 Cardiovascular Disorders.                                                                             20 hrs

  •     Evidence- Based - Care (EBC) for different cardiovascular disorders.
  •     Explore Literature for current studies on cardiac disorders v Dysrhythmias and conduction problems.

 Coronary vascular disorders: Coronary artery disease; atherosclerosis, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction

Invasive coronary artery procedures  

Valvular disorders, valvular repair and replacement procedures.

Infections of the heart: Rheumatic endocarditic, infective endocarditic, myocarditis, pericarditis.

 Management of patients with complication from heart disease 

  •    Heart failure: chronic heart failure, acute heart failure
  • Cardiogenic shock, thromboembolism, pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade, and cardiac arrest.
  •    Management of a patient with vascular disorders and problems of peripheral circulation. 
  •   Arterial disorders
  •  Venous disorders 
  •  Lymphatic disorders
  • Cellulitis

        Management of a patient with hypertension                                                         5hrs

•        Hypertension

•        Hypertensive crisis 

•        Search for the evidence in the effective care interventions for different cardiac disorders.

•        The common Cardiac disorders in Uganda.

•        Case study reviews, on different cardiac electronic care plans.

•        Application of the nursing process in all care of clients with different cardiac disorders

Respiratory Disorders                                                                                       15 hrs 

 Evidence- based- care for different Respiratory disorders.

  •     Explore the literature for current evidence for different respiratory disorders
  •   Upper and airway infections 
  •  Obstruction and trauma of the upper respiratory airway. 
  •  Management of patients with chest and lower respiratory tract disorders.
  •  Atelectasis 
  •   Respiratory infections: Pneumonia, and pulmonary tuberculosis, respiratory distress syndrome. 
  •   Pleural effusion, emphysema, Pulmonary edema, acute respiratory failure, acute 
  •  Pleural conditions: Pleurisy, 
  •  Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders
  •    COPD
  •   Asthma
  •    Chronic bronchitis  
  •  cystic fibrosis
  • Review of case studies on different respiratory electronic care plans.
  •   Application of the nursing process in the care of different clients with respiratory disorders
  •   Application of the nursing process in all care of clients with different endocrine disorders.

Clients with Endocrine Disorders:                                                                    10 hrs  

  •    (Diabetes Mellitus (I & II);   Hyper / Hypo-thyroidism)
  •    Explore evidence- based care for different endocrine disorders 
  •  Search for the evidence in the effective care interventions for different endocrine disorders.
  •  Common endocrine disorders in Uganda.
  • Diabetes mellitus
  •   Hyperthyroidism/Hypothyroidism
  •   Parathyroid gland disorders 
  •  Review case studies on different endocrine electronic care plans.
  •    Apply the nursing process in all care of different clients with neurological disorders

   Neurological disorders                                                                          10 hrs 

 Explore  evidence- based- care for different neurological disorders.

  •    Cerebrovascular disorder: Ischemic stroke, Hemorrhagic stroke  
  •   Neurologic trauma: Head injury, brain injury, spinal injury 
  •   Infectious neurologic disorder
  • Degenerative neurologic disorders: Primary brain tumors, cerebral metastases 

 Search for the evidence in the effective care interventions for neurological disorders.

  •   Describe common neurological disorders in Uganda.
  •    Review case studies on different neurological electronic care plans.
  •    Application of the nursing process in the care of different clients with neurological disorders

The elderly Clients’ Health Disorders                                                              5 hrs

  The evidence- based- care for the elderly clients’ health disorders.

  •         Search for the evidence in the effective care interventions for the elderly clients’ health disorders.
  •      The common health disorders of the elderly clients in Uganda.
  •       Review case studies of different electronic care plans for health disorders of the elderly client.
  •    Application the nursing process in all care of different health disorders of the elderly clients.

Evidence-Based Hospice care for clients with terminal illnesses                           5 hrs

The evidence- based- care for terminally ill clients.

  • Search for the evidence in the effective hospice interventions for end of life stages
  • The common concerns for the terminally ill clients.
  • Case review using different electronic care plans for hospice interventions
  • The evidence- based- care for terminally ill clients.
  •   Search for the evidence in the effective hospice interventions for end of life stages.
  • The common concerns for the terminally ill clients. 
  • Case review using different electronic care plans for hospice interventions.
  •  Application of the nursing process in the care of different health disorders of the elderly Clients.
