Course Description

The course introduces students to the jurisprudence of crime and the justification of penal legislation. It exposes them to the theories of crime and the historical origins of criminal law. It also introduces them to sentencing principles and guidelines.

 LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  1. Discuss the theoretical and sociological concepts of crime;
  2. Analyze the role and effectiveness of the penal system in light of the underlying socio-economic factors in society;
  3. Identify the role of society in “producing” criminals and the socio-political considerations in criminalizing conduct.
