Course Description

2.   Course Justification/Rationale


This course will enhance the communication skills of the students required initially for their studies but later on for their communication with patients and their relatives, their fellow health services providers and the community. It will also introduce them to the principles of counselling while interacting with patients.


3.   Course Description


This course is designed for undergraduate students. The course covers; Human communication skills, study skills, library and reading skills, listening skills, examination skills, writing skills, speaking skills and counselling skills.


4.   Course Aim


The aim of this course is to develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of principles of communication and counselling skills, and its applications in the field of biomedical sciences. The course gives the student the ability to independently take part in communication and counselling while interacting with patients and the community.


5.   Expected Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course, students will be able to:

1)  State the theories and principles of effective human communication


2)  Acquire skills in the areas of human communication, studying, writing, speaking, listening and examinations

3)  Explain the theories and principles relating to effective human communication.


4)  Identify basic methods used in counselling skills


5)  Demonstrate basic counselling skills
