Course Description

 

2.   Course Justification/Rationale

 

This course is an introduction to biomedical ethics and is intended to introduce the concepts and principles of ethics at an early stage so that students can recognize and discuss ethical issues in subsequent courses in the programme. It also introduces to them the concept of integrity and the relationship between ethical behavior and integrity.

 

3.   Course Description

 

This course will explore the major ethical issues confronting the practices of medicine and biomedical sciences.  The students will become familiar with legal and institutional positions, consider and debate opposing arguments on the various topics. The topics covered includes; Concepts and definition, Principles features of medical ethics, Physicians and society, Physicians and colleagues, Physicians and patients, Ethics and medical research, and Responsibilities and privileges of Physicians.

 

4.   Course Aim

 

This course is typically offered in undergraduate programs in pre-medicine. The course is designed to enable students examine common ethical issues they could face as doctors, such as the relationship between doctors and their patients. They discuss the importance of privacy with regards to a patient's medical condition.
