Course Description

2.   Course Justification/Rationale

The course is designed to enable biomedical students to acquire enough knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts and principles of science particularly biology and its application in health training and practice. It will also give the student insights about the structure and functions of the bodies of living organisms especially human, their hereditary characteristics and how they relate to one another in their natural environment.

3.   Course Description

This course introduces the principles and concepts of biology. Emphasis is on basic biological chemistry, cell structure and function, metabolism and energy transformation, genetics, evolution, classification, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate understanding of life at the molecular and cellular levels. Laboratory exercises reinforce lecture topics and include microscope techniques.

4.   Course Aim

The course aims to equip students with a basic knowledge of the structural and functional properties of cells. From this fundamental perspective, students are introduced to important scientific literature on the subject of cell biology, and instructed on how to critically examine data and interpretations presented by researchers.
