Course Description

 

12. Course Justification/Rationale

 

This course gives an overview of the basic principles of physical, analytical and organic chemistry. It is designed to prepare the student understand the basic chemical reactions which will enhance their future understanding of related courses such as biochemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry. The course also aims at imparting practical skills to the student which will help improve use of equipment and materials in the laboratory and in real life applications.

 

13. Course Description

 

This course presents the fundamental principles and objectives of applied chemistry; physical, analytical and organic chemistry. Topics covered include; Gases, liquid and solid; acid and bases; chemical equilibrium, Chemical Kinetics, Analytical Chemistry, organic chemistry, alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, Alkyl Halides, Alcohols, Carbonyl Compounds, Carboxylic acids and Amines. The practicals are based on; Elemental analysis, solubility tests, standardization of solutions, calculations involving concentrations and molar masses, and functional group analysis. Complete analysis involves the determination of: physical characteristics and physical constants in reference to literature.
