Course Description

PREREQUISITES

 

The student should have studied and successfully completed the multi-professional courses which include Biology / Chemistry / Physics and Mathematics which are tailor made for medical sciences.

COURSE JUSTIFICATION:

 

Introductory  concepts  to  Human  Physiology,  Homeostasis,  Physiological  Variations which itself requires that the student understands the normal functioning of the human body.

To familiarize the students with the hemopoietic system, blood, body fluids and how these interact to affect or be affected by other organ systems.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

This will be a theoretical and practical course in which students will apply the theory to carry out the practicals in Physiology laboratory.

COURSE AIMS

 

By the end of this course, the student should be able to do the following:

 

a.   Describe the body fluid compartments and explain the mechanisms governing the interchange of the various substances between different fluid compartments.

b.   Describe the components of blood and their roles in the normal functioning of the body.

c.   Describe the regulation of body fluid compartments.

 

d.   Techniques for quantifying various body fluid volumes

 

e.   Explain the normal hematological values, physiological variations and its regulation.


f.   Describe advanced techniques for measuring hematological values

 

g.   Explain hemoglobin genotypes determin
