Course Description

PRE- REQUISITE:

 

For one to understand the scope of the Biochemistry Anatomy must have had the basic

 

Biological studies at Advanced and Ordinary Levels

 

COURSE JUSTIFICATION

 

This course provides the student with basic knowledge of the chemistry, structure and functions of biomolecules and introduces the links between chemistry and biochemistry.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

This will be a theoretical and practical course introducing students to biochemistry to as to understand the functioning of systems and cellular level and their metabolisms to introduce  the  students  to  Biochemistry,  structure,  function  and  metabolism  of  the different biomolecules and their role in body function.

COURSE AIMS

 

By the end of the course the student should be able to:

 

a.   Describe the Human general cell structure/ organelles and their function

b.   Describe the nutritional requirements of the human body

 

c.   Discuss  the  relationships  between  structure  and  functions  of biomolecules

d.   Discuss the digestion/absorption/metabolism of biomolecules and vitamins


e.   Describe the chemistry/characteristics/importance of enzymes in biochemical pathways

f.    Describe the characteristics and importance of water as a universal medium in living cells

g.   Explain  the  concept  og  PH  and  the  mech
