PRE-REQUISITES: MPP110; BIOLOGY COURSE JUSTIFICATION:
To familiarize the student with the micro-organisms responsible for human infections. This is necessary to contexturize the pharmacological management of infections which will be studied later.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is aimed at equipping students with knowledge of microbiology and common microbiology technics to enable them understand how these organisms affect the normal functioning of the body
COURSE AIMS
During the course, the student will be facilitated to learn the following;
a. Describe the bacteria of medical importance with respect to their morphology, physiology, metabolism and diversity as related to their biochemical characteristics and habitats
b. Be acquainted with the common diseases these bacteria cause, their diagnosis and treatment
c. Describe the fungi of medical importance with respect to their morphology, physiology, classification, disease causation, and treatment.
d. Discuss viruses with respect to their proper attributes, life cycles, general biological characteristics, pathogenesis, preventive measures, diagnosis and treatment
e. Describe the application of the standard microbiological laboratory techniques used to detect and manage the presence of microorganisms
