Course Description

PREREQUISITES: PHY 2201(endocrinology)

 

COURSE JUSTIFICATION:

 

This course aims to:

 

Provide an overview of the different hormone systems and their most important actions in regulating all functions including; metabolism, growth and development, water and electrolyte balance and behavior.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

This will a theoretical course delivered mainly through interactive lectures with critical thinking discussions and demonstrations.

COURSE AIMS

 

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

 

a.    Describe the organization and control of endocrine system

 

b.    Explain the concepts of second messenger systems

 

c.    Explain the actions of hormones and intracellular homeostasis

 

d.    Describe the physiology and Anatomy of neuroendocrine mechanisms

 

e.     Describe the synthesis, storage, secretions ,transport, metabolism  and control of the different endocrine glands

f.     Describe the posterior pituitary with respect to cell types, vascular supply, development and PHAtomic function relative to the hypothalamus.

g.     Describe the anterior pituitary with respect to cell types, vascular supply, development and PHAtomic function relative to the hypothalamus.


h.     Identify appropriate hypothalamic factors that control the secretion of the pituitary hormones and describe their route of transport from the hypothalamus to the anterior pituitary.

i.      Discuss negative feedback control of anterior pituitary hormone secretion at multiple lev
