COURSE JUSTIFICATION:

This course aims to:

Give an overview of how the nervous system receives information from the different sensory organs (input) and then integrate (central processing) all these and determine the appropriate responses by the body (output).

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This will be a theoretical course in which there will be discussion of the current trends in neural physiology and critical thinking and review of different manuscripts. The students will all also be exposed to neurophysiology practicals

COURSE AIMS

During the course of study the students will be facilitated to;

a.   Describe the general organization of the Nervous system.

b.   Describe Sensory function of the brain-sensory area of the brain, cutaneous deep and visceral sensation

c.   Describe Motor function of the brain-pyramidal, extra-pyramidal and cerebellum d.   Explain the reticular activating system-sleep and wakefulness

e.   Explain the higher nervous function- limbic system: motivation, emotion learning and memory

f.   describe the basic organization of the autonomic nervous system

g.   explain the modes of transmission in ANS-adrenergic and cholinergic transmissions

h.   explain the biosynthesis, storage, release and degradation of neurotransmitters
