Properties Of Matter
The course introduces the student to the basics of Forces between atoms
and intermolecular forces, attractive and repulsive forces, surface tension,
capillarity, elastic properties of solids. The course prepares students to be
aware of and able to predict why physical phenomena occur in the physical world
they will work in.
To identify the
characteristics of matter in terms of their properties and to discuss the basic
principles of acoustics
By the end of this
course, the student should be able to:

and repulsive forces.

calculations to compare characteristic properties of a variety of substances to
predict behavior such as its elasticity etc.

subsequent experiments to measure the Young’s modulus of a cantilever, loaded
§ Solve Poiseuille’s
formula to simple problems.
§ Discuss low
pressure measurement instruments
§ Discuss ultrasonics and acoustics
