COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course deals with the installation of transmission and distribution lines, laying of underground cables, inspection and handling of transformers, testing of various electrical equipments. Various ways of maintenance of electrical equipment, Maintenance of Distribution Transformers and Grid Substation, Maintenance of Motors and Domestic Installation, Commissioning and testing of electrical equipment

COURSE JUSTIFICATION/RATIONALE

The purpose of this course is to enable the students to understand the fundamentals of electrical installation.  In addition, the course equips them with the knowledge of testing and maintenance for various engineering and other technical fields of application

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

• Practice the safe and practical applications of electrical repair and service.
• Work independently and inter-dependently on a construction and/or maintenance project meeting industry standards.

• Comply with published electrical codes and safety standards while in maintenance.
• Select and order appropriate electrical parts (materials) based on blueprints and drawings.
• install electrical systems/equipment in both domestic and commercial settings.
• Practice troubleshooting, repair, and conduct routine maintenance measures of electrical systems/equipment.
• Outline  the application of industry recognized procedures, working practices and the requirements of statutory and non-statutory regulations

LEARNING OUTCOMES

A student completing the course is expected to:

• Repair and install residential and commercial electrical circuits/equipment
• Carry out Electrical system troubleshooting using various electrical test instruments
• Repair and install motor controls and circuits
• Perform routine preventative maintenance of electrical equipment and circuits
• Repair and maintain both AC and DC equipment and circuits
• Interpret specifications, drawings and diagrams.
• Inspect, test and certify electrical equipment and circuits.
• Apply recognized procedures, working practices and requirements of electrical statutory and non-statutory regulations
