Course Description

This course examines the concept of gender as a social construct. The links between gender and development are explained, as well as theories and the feminist movement. The course also looks at institutions and how they are gendered, gender analysis and gender issues such as gender-based violence.

Course Objectives

By the end of the Course Unit, students should be able to:

  • Explain the major gender concepts and how gender relates with other social subjectivities  such as sex, race, religion, laws or policies etc.;

·         Describe the major theories of gender;

·          Understand the key political, economic and social aspects influencing and shaping gender equality and equity and the implications for development; and

·         Identify, analyse and suggest solutions for the core gender issues in society.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should have the knowledge and skills that will enable them to comprehend and explain gender, undertake gender analysis and also solve gender issues in society.
