Course Description

The course examines the concepts and tools of policy analysis. It explores the application of development policy in different parts of the world. It provides students with both rapid and more complex methods of development policy analysis and implementation. It covers important considerations in the process of policy formulation, analysis and implementation such as identifying data sources and weighing the utility of data; establishing criteria for formulation and analysis of policies; assessing policy alternatives; choosing among policies; and monitoring policy implementation.

Course Objectives

  • To enable students understand the meaning development policy.
  • To help students learn the tools for policy analysis.
  • To enable students understand the causes for failure of development policies in the Global South.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:  

  • Explain the factors which shaped the process of policy formulation, the processes involved in policy formulation and analysis. Students therefore should be in position to take part in these processes as experts.
