Course Content and Outline

  • Introduction, definition of gender, sex, gender stereotypes, gender identify, gender roles and sex roles 
  • Examine the questions of gender stereotypes and impact on development 
  • Examine the question of gender roles and sex roles and their impact on the development process 
  • Explore the question of gender violence; sexual harassment, sexual based violence, gender based violence, and domestic violence; meaning, causes, effects, and the way forward
  • Examine the history of gender imbalances, causes and the way forward 
  • Examine the question of women’s oppression and even men’s oppression, critical analysis of the causes, impact on development and the way forward
  • Explore the question of power and patriarchy, historical development and the way forward
  • To explore different approaches in addressing women issues in development (WID, WAD and GAD). Historical development, impacts on development and opportunities for better women development 
  • Explore the concept of masculinity and felinity, their impact on the development and the way forward.
  • Explore the question of gender analysis in organizations and communities. Its relevance and impact on development
  • Examine gender theories and contemporary challenges of gender in the development process 
  • Examine the relationship between gender and the following; education, culture, religion, health, politics, law, ethics, poverty, governance, and economics in the development process 
  • Explore the gender policy in Uganda and its implications in the development process 
  • Explore the question of engendering development
