Course Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course covers detailed design issues related to both deep and shallow foundations and the application of modern soil mechanics principles and analytical techniques including numerical modelling of soil structure interaction problems using appropriate numerical software.

LEARNING Objectives

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

·        Interpret and select appropriate soil parameters from site investigation data

·        Describe field monitoring in geotechnical design

·        Explain soil/structure interaction effects

·        Describe the advantages and limitations of advanced analytical techniques

·        Discuss CPT interpretation and application to pile design

LEARNING OUTCOMES

A student completing the course is expected to:

·        Be able to discuss the importance of key soil parameters and how these may be derived through appropriate element testing or interpretation of site investigation data

Have the ability to design shallow and deep foundations to carry ultimate loads
