Course Description

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course covers asphalt and asphalt-aggregate mix, properties of asphalt binder and aggregate, engineering of mixes, effects of construction on material properties,   characterization of asphalt and concrete materials, concrete and asphalt pavements’ environmental impacts and recent developments in asphalt and concrete technology.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

·        Explain on the properties of asphalt aggregate paving mixtures for different applications.

·        Define production, engineering properties, modification, testing, classification, specification, economics and design of asphalt binders

·        Discuss on aggregates used for asphalt and concrete mixes

·        Describe asphalt and concrete mixes

·        Describe construction of asphalt and concrete mixes

·        Define recycling of previously used materials

·        Describe how to use CalBack to do FWD back calculation.

·        Describe how to use CalME for pavement design.

·        Describe environmental considerations in the selection, design, construction and reuse of asphalt and concrete mixes

·        Discuss on current state-of-the-practice, state-of-the-art and research in asphalt and concrete pavement technology.

A student completing the course is expected to:

·        Discuss the desired properties of asphalt aggregate paving mixtures for different applications.

·        Describe asphalt binders, including production, engineering properties, modification, testing, classification, specification, economics and design.

·        Define aggregates used for asphalt and concrete mixes, including production, engineering properties, modification, testing, and specification, interaction with asphalt and concrete, and design.

·        Describe asphalt and concrete mixes, including their uses, production, engineering properties, testing, performance, distress mechanisms, specification, and design.

·        Discuss the construction of asphalt and concrete mixes, including equipment, procedures, and influence on properties, constraints, specifications, and quality control.

·        Describe recycling of previously used materials, including Recycled Asphalt Pavement, in asphalt mix technology.

·        Describe how to use CalBack to do FWD back calculation.

·        Describe how to use CalME for pavement design.
