Course Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

This course introduces students to the importance of conservation and an understanding of the strong relationship between development, environment and conservation hence promotion of sustainable development

 

COURSE JUSTIFICATION/RATIONALE

 

Development in every part of the world has both beneficial and adverse relationship with the environment. Thereby, the understanding of the method of conservation is essential to encourage sustainable development. It promotes change of the attitude and mentality that conservation and development cannot work hand in hand.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Explain the concept of Development, conservation and sustainable development
  • Identify and analyze the link between environment, conservation and development
  • Explain and discuss concepts of sustainable development
  • Analyze the outcomes of the different conferences that tried to highlight the relationship between conservation and development
  • Develop and promote development projects and programs that are sustainable
  • Appreciate the need to conserve living resources as a means to realization of the path to sustainable development

 

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

A student completing the course is expected to:

§  make an informed choice how to study conservation and sustainable development making use of particular theoretical frameworks and approaches;

§  analyse and discuss the relations between conservation and sustainable development;

§  critically evaluate the central concepts sustainability, development, conservation, and corporate social responsibility in order to specify a problem definition;

§  explain development and conservation paradigms in a historical perspective and relate these paradigms to sustainable development;

§  compare and evaluate the roles of governmental, business and third sector organizations in the pursuit for sustainable development;

§  compose and defend a project to substantiate the development of a creative and innovative idea for sustainable development of conservation;

§  indicate and appraise the role of sustainability in the students' future scientific and professional career.
