Course Description



The course illustrates the fundamental concepts of GIS and remote sensing technologies. Topics include the physical basis for remote sensing, remote sensing systems, digital image processing, data structures, database design, and spatial data analysis. The course is not intended to provide students with extensive training in particular image processing or GIS packages. However, hands-on computer laboratory sessions re-enforce critical concepts. Working knowledge of personal computers and completion of a term project are required.




The aim of the course is to introduce students to the process of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the procedures that are followed in environmental management in industry.




By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

§  Describe an introductory principle and working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

§  Use GIS through a number of case study exercises.

§  Explain basic concepts of the physics of remote sensing and an introduction to the major remote sensing systems that are in operation today.

§  Identify current research, technology and policy developments in the GIS/RS area and their potential applications to environmental and sustainability issues.




A student completing the course is expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

§  The concepts that define Geographic Information Systems.

§  the geographic space with concepts and terms commonly used to build operating models in GIS.

§  the diverse techniques and instruments adequately to measure, locate and find bearings on a map and in a field. Photo-interpret basic environmental and socioeconomic variables using photographs taken in Spain.

§  The use GIS and its geo-processes and functions. Know and apply some basic techniques to thematic mapping design.

§  Remote Sensing concepts, physical fundaments and components and adequately use vocabulary, terminology and nomenclature of the discipline.

§  the main Remote Sensing Systems and programs (sensors, platforms, etc.) and assess its potential to spatial analysis.

§  the use main methods to improve, correct and interpret properly Remote Sensing Images.

§  The factors responsible for the main land cover behaviour.

§  The use GIS software to perform different spatial analysis and satellite image digital analysis. Prepare documents of medium complexity, consisting of text, maps, graphs and tables to clearly present the design specifications of a data model for GIS application.
