Course Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will look at arid and semi-arid lands which have been majorly classified into three main categories i.e. hyper-arid zones, arid zones and semi-arid zones. Humans being one of the great resource users play a major role of expanding aridity that is fast taking up semi-arid and sub-humid realms. It’s against this background that learners need to be equipped with knowledge on how to manage these fragile ecosystems and combat the increasing trend.

COURSE JUSTIFICATION/RATIONALE

The arid and semi-arid lands in different parts of the world are expanding, thus there is need for students to have understanding of this fragile ecosystems and also the knowledge of the sustaining approaches that may help in reducing the trend in this climate change era.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Identifying the types of arid region and classified them into different categories
  • Identifying the ecological pressures and responses in arid and semi-arid lands
  • Identifying the effects of climate change on arid and semi-arid lands
  • Identifying processes of management of arid and semi-arid lands

LEARNING OUTCOMES

A student completing the course is expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • the types of arid region and classified them into different categories
  • the ecological pressures and responses in arid and semi-arid lands
  • the effects of climate change on arid and semi-arid lands
  • processes of management of arid and semi-arid lands
