Course Description

The course is designed to impart skills and advanced knowledge to students in order to apply remote sensing and GIS technologies for the sustainable management and use of natural resources. During this course, students are made aware of the practical importance of remote sensing and GIS technologies. The course emphasizes the skills and practicability of remote sensing and GIS. The students are introduced to in-depth concepts and principles and how to carry out simple and complex projects involving remote sensing and GIS tools. Collection of field primary spatial data is emphasized.

COURSE JUSTIFICATION/RATIONALE

The need to gain practical skills in accessing, manipulating and analysing spatial data using a GIS, and to present and interpret the results of these analyses effectively

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

Explain the influence of image characteristics on the quality of maps generated from aerial photography and satellite imagery in the context of environmental and wildlife management

Apply remote sensing process (acquisition of remotely sensed data by different sensors, advanced image processing, conduct field ground truthing, carry out image interpretation/classification using selected software)

Carry out step by step exercises in GIS data capture, GIS relational data basing, data manipulation, cartographic modeling for a real world problem/opportunity

Design and implement simple real world projects using the knowledge and skills of remote sensing and GIS in the field of environmental or natural resources management

LEARNING OUTCOMES

A student completing the course is expected to:

Demonstrate knowledge in spatial environment and society research and applications

Synthesise and apply that knowledge to formulate new applications

Pursue a guided investigation of a topic involving remote sensing and/or GIS

Communicate the results of that investigation in seminar and written formats
