Gendered Economic Gap in Uganda: Education Attainment and Women’s Access to and Land Ownership in Bunyoro Sub-region
The study investigated the role of education attainment in women's ownership of land inBunyoro sub-region, Uganda. The study adopted a descriptive research design and aqualitative approach in data collection. Accordingly, 25 key informants comprising ofcommunity leaders, educationists, CSO officials and women residents of Bunyoro subregionpurposively selected by the researcher were interviewed while another 15 womenfrom Bunyoro sub-region participated in focus group discussion (FGD). The study findingsshow that education plays a crucial role in women’s access to and ownership of land inBunyoro sub-region, thus an improvement in female education will greatly empower themto own land and other productive resources. In addition, it was observed that apart fromeducation, culture, discriminatory attitude and poverty also affect women’s’ ability toaccess and own land in Bunyoro sub-region and in Uganda.
