Prevalence and Factors Linked to Severe Malaria in Under 5 Children at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, Western Uganda

Bagoole Martin Hitra

Malaria remains a significant global public health concern, particularly among childrenunder the age of five, with a high prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa. This study wasconducted at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, Western Uganda, to assess theprevalence and factors associated with severe malaria in under five children. The researchincluded socio-demographic, household, and health facility factors. The study found aprevalence of 65.3% for severe malaria in the pediatric ward. Notably, a child's age, distance from home to the health facility, and waiting time before seeking medical carewere significantly associated with severe malaria. The odds of severe malaria were higheramong older children, those living farther from the hospital, and those with longer waitingtimes for medical care. These findings underscore the importance of timely access tohealthcare services and targeted interventions to reduce severe malaria among children inthe region.
