An Evaluation of How Parenting Practices Affect One's Self-Esteem
Research has shown that parenting styles significantly impact children's and adolescents'development, as the family is the primary socializing agency. Self-esteem, a selfassessmentof one's self-worth, has been extensively researched and linked to the mental,psychological, and emotional development of children. There is no universally bestparenting style, as culture and individual characteristics differ. In Western cultures, selfesteemis consistently negatively correlated with parenting styles characterized by lowacceptance and high protectiveness. Variations exist in which parenting styles lead to thehighest levels of self-esteem.
